Book Spotlight & #Excerpt ~ The Demons of Montmartre by Laurence Raphael Brothers (Nora Simeon Investigations, Book 4) ~ @lbrothers @MirrorWorldPub #UrbanFantasy #UF

Mirror World Publishing and Sapphyria's Book Promotions present the 1-week virtual book tour for  The Demons of Montmartre by Laurence Raphael Brothers, book four in the Nora Simeon Investigations series.

About the Book:

Private Investigator Nora Simeon and her partner Eyre work for the Commission, the secret organization that regulates the summoning of demons in the financial industry. It’s the Commission’s job to suppress all public knowledge of sorcery. So when a mysterious letter from a person who calls themselves l’Invocateur threatens to expose the secret to the world, it’s Nora’s job to track him down.

In search of L’Invocateur, Nora and Eyre are off to Paris, but before they go, Madame Villiers, Nora’s mother and one of the Commission leaders in New York, reveals that Nora’s father may be in danger.

Nora has never known her father, a man named Simeon who disappeared when she was an infant. Spurred by her mother’s warning, Nora hunts both her father and l’Invocateur in France. From the elegant halls of the Société Générale to the altar of the Sacré-Cœur, Nora and Eyre find the threads of their search coming together in The Demons of Montmartre.

Read an Excerpt:

My mother put her demitasse of espresso down on its saucer with a precise click. She was wearing Armani tonight, a slinky black jacquard jacket that gave the impression she had nothing on underneath, above dark red trousers. The sad thing was she had the youthful figure to pull it off, looking as usual as if she’d just stepped off a runway. The way I had it figured she beat me out in all respects; prettier, smarter, richer, and even more of an asshole.

We were sitting down at a corner table at the Michelin three-star Le Bernardin on 51st Street, our meal now a memory. The first course featured sautéed langoustine with a fennel-carrot mousseline, the second, poached skate in a brown butter sauce with capers and peppers over rice, and dessert was a mont blanc with chestnut cremeux and rum-chestnut ice cream. This restaurant was only a quarter mile from my apartment, but if I ate here every night my bank account (fatter than usual on account of a bonus for last year’s job in Japan) would be zeroed in three months. When not stuffing my face, I’d spent the meal studying my mother, trying to figure out where she was coming from. She seemed strangely uncomfortable and reticent, not saying much until the meal was cleared away.

Finally, over espresso with accompanying shot-glasses of near-frozen anisette, she spoke her first meaningful words of the evening. Not the reason she’d called me here, but a reminder of the debt I owed. Typical.

“I assume Martha soloed successfully,” she said.

“Yes. A perfect landing.”

The tone of my voice must have made it clear I was surprised she cared.

“Why Nora,” said my mother, “I have the highest regard for your ward. We had a nice chat during our one real meeting. And I was after all responsible for obtaining her papers. Birth certificate, social security, passport...you know these things aren’t easy to secure these days.”

They are if you’re an ultra-wealthy sorcerer in the Commission, I didn’t say. I wouldn’t have asked her for a favor for myself, but she was my last resort after running into a brick wall trying to establish a legal identity for Martha on my own. I’d been surprised at how readily my mother had acceded to the request, with hardly any snark at all. Of course I’d clenched my teeth when the papers arrived for Martha under the name Villiers, my mother’s last name, the name I’d rejected for myself. It was at the same time a surprising gesture for my mother to offer her name to someone she hardly knew and a blatant rebuke directed at me. But what the hell. If Martha ever got in trouble with the occult authorities, not inconceivable given her demonic origin, it wouldn’t hurt to have my mother’s name to fall back on.

“Is she still considering an application to the academy?” I’d been silent long enough my mother filled in the gap.

“I believe so.” I wasn’t sure how I felt about Martha wanting to join the Air Force. I mean, the US government wasn’t exactly a shining beacon of virtue. But we’d discussed the matter. Martha said that she’d refuse deployment and resign her commission if she was ever called on to do anything vile, and I believed her, too. She honestly wanted to pay back a debt to her assumed country, even though I thought the balance of obligation was skewed the other way. And, yeah, of course she didn’t have to say how much she wanted to fly a fighter. Flying was her thing, and I wanted her to have every bit of it she could get. Her very first week in our world, magically disguised as a dog of all things, she rode on board a jet across the Atlantic and decided she wanted to be a pilot.

Then what mother was asking sank in. “But she wouldn’t want you to sleaze her way in with either sorcery or bribery.”

“Oh, no,” she said in that unctuous way she had, “I wouldn’t dream of it. It’s just that a High School Equivalency diploma won’t make it easy, no matter how well she scores on her exams. But a vice-presidential nomination...that wouldn’t guarantee anything, it would just balance out the negatives, if you see what I mean.”

“Wait, what, the vice president? Of the United States? You can make her do what you want?”

I knew of course that the Commission had enormous influence over the government, but I didn’t realize they outright owned our top politicians.

“Nora, please! It’s part of the VP’s job. It’s not graft, it’s her duty. She has one or two nominations every year that she hands out to qualified applicants. Just...with the ordinary application process, it would be easy for someone like Martha to be overlooked. She has no obvious connections, and they care about such things at the academies. I’ll be evening the odds for her, is all.”

Occult private eye, Nora Simeon, and Eyre, her uncannily pretty boyfriend, are on another case on behalf of the Commission, the secret organization that controls financial sorcery in the Americas. Read an Excerpt:

Technically, it was Entering but not Breaking. Eyre had charmed the superintendent out of the spare key to apartment 4-G, and with the aid of a bit of machine oil I was working it slowly into the lock to avoid making any noise. We were in the fourth-floor corridor of a red brick apartment building on Parsons Boulevard in Flushing, Queens, a pleasant working-class neighborhood with plenty of trees and quiet side streets. Someone was cooking a pot roast in a nearby apartment, and the aroma was reminding me I’d skipped lunch tracking down this address.

“I’m ready, Nora,” Eyre said. My blue-haired assistant was poised, crouched at my side, waiting for me to get past the lock. I tried turning the key. Slowly...slowly...I could feel resistance, but it wasn’t stuck. A millimeter at a time and— something clacked loudly. Fuck. The deadbolt must have been spring-loaded.

I turned the doorknob to clear the latch and slammed the door open with my shoulder. No chain. Eyre darted inside as soon as the gap was wide enough, and I followed an instant later, backing him up with my gun drawn. There was a time early in my career when I would have called for some Commission heavies and a staff sorcerer or two for back-up because come on, there could be an angry demon in there. And a time more recently when I would have gone in alone because fuck it. But now it was Eyre and me. With his slender build and boyish face, my assistant didn’t look like much of a fighter, but I doubted there was any demon who could beat him one-on-one.

This was a renegade sorcerer’s safe house, a VP from Morgan Stanley who’d cracked and gone on a murder spree when he was passed over for promotion, using a demon he’d illicitly summoned for his own private use as an assassin. I was honestly expecting the flat to be empty, the sorcerer not being so stupid as to hide out in town with the Commission after him, but it was possible he was there, and it was possible the demon was there, too. As it happened, both those things were true.

Eyre put the brakes on and didn’t do anything violent immediately, so I paused behind him to take in the scene. It was a barebones one-bedroom flat, a dining room nook by the door, a tiny kitchen off to the left, the dining area opening into a living room, and a short corridor on the right leading off to a pair of doors, no doubt the bedroom and bathroom. No furniture at all, except for some kind of collapsible chrome thing at the back of the living room and— Oh. That was a severed human head on the floor in front of it.

The chrome thing unfolded itself, revealing itself to be a demon after all. The creature gave an initial impression of a high-end Ikea coffee table put together by a demented elder god who’d gotten frustrated with the instructions and never could find a use for half the hex bolts. The demon must have been summoned recently, as they hadn’t had any time to adapt their form from the original jointed assembly of polished metal rods and plates to which their spirit had been bound. Unlimbered, their effect was something like a skeletal centaur with metal bones, except that for a head they had a hinged gripper like a two-fingered hand at the end of a long, segmented, prehensile neck. Instead of hooves or feet their legs ended in sharpened points that made them teeter precariously as they rose from the floor, and two longer armlike limbs of the same sort extended from their shoulders. Though they had some trouble balancing at first, once up on all fours they were stable, even graceful.

“Well,” Eyre said, “this is messed up.”

Despite his awesome martial skills, Eyre was far more deeply affected by violence and death than me, so I gave him a glance, but he seemed okay. He was focused on the situation, prepared to defend himself if necessary.

The demon tensed for a moment, reared back as if about to spring, but then they brought their two arms up, crossed them like a violinist, and ran one long chrome limb up and down the other while bowing it back and forth. An unearthly ringing tone played, a little like the sound when you rub your finger on the edge of a wine glass, not at all unpleasant. As the sound rose and fell, sliding smoothly up and down the scale, I realized there was something in the overtones...oh. They were speaking, an ethereal, shimmering voice arising from around and behind the varying note they were playing on their arms.

“—come to destroy me?”

“Not unless you make it necessary,” I told them. “Did you kill him?”

“No! Not my master. Only his enemies.”

Eyre advanced cautiously, kneeling beside the decapitated head on the floor. The demon made as if to protect it, but then subsided. They extended their long gripper limb and placed it beside the head, caressing its cheek before withdrawing.

“That’s him,” Eyre said, “I think. Carson. Our subject.”

“If you didn’t kill him,” I asked the demon, “who did?”

“I don’t know!” Throbbing through the overtones of the demon’s metallic voice, the creature’s agony and sorrow were unmistakable. “I was here, he was sleeping in the bedroom. He was going to take me with him. He said we would go to Maru— Maruno— to a place where the Commission could not follow. It was the morning, time to go, to take the train, he didn’t come out, I waited, I waited, and then, and then I went in to see, to wake him up. And then...”

The demon collapsed. They just fell to the floor in a heap, looking once again like a mess of chrome rods haphazardly thrown together, only stirring a little, making feeble clinking noises to show they were still alive. Struck down by grief, I guess.

“We’d better check the bedroom.” I nodded at the creature. “What about the demon?”

“Poor thing.”

I wanted to argue the point—the poor thing had killed two Morgan Stanley vice presidents and an executive VP to boot—but this wasn’t the time or the place, so I led Eyre down the hallway to the closed doors.

New Book Release Spotlight & #Giveaway ~ The Gimmal Ring by Karen Koski ~ #MiddleGrade Urban Fantasy, Adventure, Middle Grade ~ @MirrorWorldPub

She wants the ring and she wants it bad!

Book Details:

Title: The Gimmal Ring
Author: Karen Koski

Page Count: 124

Genres: Urban Fantasy, Adventure, Middle Grade

Publisher: Mirror World Books

About The Gimmal Ring:

Gwendolyn Gimmal desperately wants an invitation to the mysterious Gimmal Gala where her family’s coveted ring is bestowed upon new inductees. It’s not that she particularly likes bling, but because she knows it will unlock exciting secrets and reveal what she believes will be her true life’s path. Her younger brother, Gage, also wants to attend the party, but mostly for the food.

After finding her way into the hidden gala, Gwen learns that The Gimmal Ring is not only a piece of jewellery, but also a secret society of people. Things go awry when their parents are kidnapped from the Gala and held for ransom. Gwen and her brother must solve the clues and find the hidden formula the kidnappers have demanded by midnight, or they will never see their family members again.

Their newly discovered enhanced abilities, while fun, are not completely reliable. Cracking newspaper codes, deciphering invisible maps, and playing a high stakes game of Enigma Machine Twister, are just some of the challenges they must overcome if they are to succeed in time. The adventure starts when they flush themselves in The Tele-Potti, a teleporting commode, and it all goes down the drain from there.

Read an Excerpt:

The hair on her arms stood at attention. She lay on her stomach in the dark, peering through a gap in the curtains, her body rigid with anticipation. Today was the day. Gwendolyn Gimmal was sure of it. She could feel it in her bones...or maybe it was just the hard floor? She had finally learned to slow her breathing to an undetectable level without passing out. Gwen would not be caught off guard. When it arrived, she would be ready. She was stealth, a statue, an invisible ninja.

“She knows we can see her, right?” a voice asked.

Gwen jumped. Her body hovered above the floor for a split second before it thudded down. Her boney hips hit first, breaking her fall. Gwen rolled over and glared at her brother Gage. She wiped at the black paint under her eyes. It was the third time he had snuck up on her...this week. Clearly, she was not ready for the life-changing event to occur.

“You know Gwen, it’s like waiting for Santa Claus. If he sees you, he won’t come to give you gifts,” Gage said, very matter of fact.

Back to practicing my belly crawl down the hallway at 3 am, she thought.

“Ahh, hi,” a voice said.

Just then Gwen realized there was someone standing beside her brother.

“Sorry to interrupt…whatever it is that you’re doing,” said Josh, a boy from her class, “but I forgot to get those math notes from you.”

Gage munched noisily on crackers. “Oh ya, I let Josh in the back door when I came home.” He shoved more in his mouth. They watched as crumbs fell to the floor.

“Really good hiding spot,” Josh said. Gwen just looked at him. “Yup, really, reaally good.” Josh rocked back on his heels and whistled faintly. “The uhh, black make-up is umm, interesting,” he said making swiping gestures under his eyes with his index fingers.

“Awkward,” Gage said.

“Ugh.” Gwen groaned and flipped back over onto her stomach, covering herself with a blanket. Back to square one. “I’m not worthy!” she moaned.

“What is she doing?” Josh whispered.

Gage shrugged. “Waiting for an invitation to a party.”

Josh pondered that for a moment. “Weird.”

“Welcome to my world,” Gage said and left the room.

Gwen knew this wasn’t just any party. It was the Gimmal Gala, where she was sure wonderful, secretive, life altering things happened.
